America was surrendered to a very high kill shelter along with her 5 puppies. Another rescue took the puppies and the volunteers that we work with at this shelter asked if we could help the momma. They saved her on Sept 11, and decided to name her America. America went through heartworm treatment and had a tumor removed when she arrived with us. A wonderful family adopted her and helped her through her recovery. Unfortunately, with Merry feeling a lot better she has decided that she wants to be the boss of the household. The family has another dog who is now sick and three young children and feel that Merry would do better in another environment.

Merry is now back with us and getting settled into her new foster home. We will post more about her soon.

02/04/09 - Merry has been with me for several weeks now. I have started calling her Miss America because she does like to be the top dog. She loves people, is housebroken and does not get into anything while I am at work/out of the house. Also, I have taken Merry to the dog park several times and she has done great with the other dogs. She does like to wander so I have kept her on a leash but while at the park has shown no aggression towards the other dogs. She also seems to enjoy running around my yard and entertaining herself with a tennis ball.

Now, what I have noticed is that Merry does want to be the top dog and does not like it when too many dogs are at my house. If there are too many dogs at my place she will start to snap at them.

So, I think Merry would do very well in a home with someone who can giver her lots of undivided attention - preferably as the only dog - who could take her to the dog park or for walks. I think she would also benefit from obedience classes as she can be stubborn.

Also, as she does like to be dominant, I would suggest she go to a home with older children who are used to having dogs. Finally, no cats. While she hasn't tried to hurt my cats she is very curious about them. Miss America doesn't seem to realize that when they hiss and swat at her that they really do want to be left alone.
