Jasper was adopted in 2008, but had to come back to us. His family has a young child and is expecting another baby and they do not have the time for Jasper that he needs. Jasper needs an active family who will pay attention to him and make sure that he gets the exercise that he needs. He can jump fences so would need supervision outside. He would love someone who is home most of the time or some doggie friends who will keep him company.
Here is what Jasper's family has told us about him... Jasper is a 3 year-old black lab mix, about 75 pounds. We think he may be mixed with some sort of hound because he loves the outdoors, running, and chasing small animals like bunnies and squirrels. He is house broken. He is very good with other dogs and small children. He may seem aggressive towards other dogs at first, but he warms up to them very quickly. He will be the dominant dog of the household.
He is very strong and pulls when he is walked. After trying many different walking methods (leads, harnesses, choke collars), the only thing that keeps him from pulling is a prong collar. He needs a lot of exercise (which he does not get with us). Without it, he tries to escape anytime the door opens. He is too fast to catch on foot and will run until his pads bleed. New owners will need to be aware that Jasper can jump fences (he easily leaps over 5 ft tall fences and we are not sure what height he cannot jump).
He has some anxiety when it comes to spotting other animals from windows or glass doors. He cries and runs to all windows barking at whatever he sees. Finally, we just learned he may have separation anxiety and will bark if left alone for long periods of time.
Otherwise, he is very calm, loves to sleep on comfortable dog beds, and likes to be pet. He also likes swimming and playing catch (he can jump amazingly high). We do not suggest giving him any type of chew bone because he will swallow large chunks at a time.
Bubba/Jasper's original bio: Bubba is a wonderful dog with one of the best dispositions, ever. He loves to sit and snuggle and give you lots of kisses to tell you how happy his is to be out of the shelter. He has wonderful house manners and appears to be totally housebroken. He loves kids and other dogs. From what we can tell, he gets along with cats, but is not currently living with any.
He almost cantors when he walks, maybe due his long legs. He likes being outside, but also likes to know where his family is. He will bark a few times when his foster dad leaves the house in the morning, but calms quickly. We either crate him or leave him in one room with one of his foster siblings when we leave, and he does well with either one.
He needs some TLC to fatten him up a bit since he is a little on the thin side, but loves to eat, so that shouldn't be a problem. He has shown no food aggression with his foster brother or sisters.
He is an all-around great dog, who will be a wonderful addition to any family who might be lucky enough to adopt him! Hurry and apply for this guy today before his foster dad decides to keep him for himself :-)
Bubba was rescued from a pound in North Carolina. The dogs at this facility do not have much of a chance of making it out so we try to get as many as we can. He was one of the lucky ones, but there were others that we could not save. We need more foster homes, please consider joining us to save more lives!
