We received the following email about this labbie boy and could not turn our backs on him. He will be arriving within the next few days and we will post an update about him once we meet him.

It's almost impossible to believe that a young.....purebred.....already neutered and vaccinated.....house-broken.....Yellow Labrador Retriever.....that's good with children, cats, other dogs (and even CHICKENS!)......would linger in a shelter for MONTHS! Such has been the case for Nittany. The reality of the situation is about to come to a very sad conclusion though as Nittany's days have now become numbered.

This OH-SO-HANDSOME boy has had numerous possible adoptions and rescues, but EACH and EVERY one of them has fallen through, for one reason or another. Perhaps it's because his Petfinder file write-up doesn't exactly portray him in the most positive light. According to the info found there, this 3-year-old AKC registered boy "is a big Lab and a very physical guy. He needs a thorough education on boundaries. Nittany does have a tendency to get a bit vocal and mouthy. At times he behaves like an obnoxious and spoiled kid -- but certainly not a dangerous one. He needs a bit of training, and some exercise to burn off his extra energy."

Anyone who knows the breed, knows full well that Labs can get a little bit energetic (and obnoxious) after being kenneled almost 24/7 for months!!! Then again, pretty much any dog breed would. And in reality, what dog DOESN'T need to be taught boundaries, as well as need some additional training?

Sadly, when people now come to see him at the shelter, he's not "showing well" as he's getting sick of being kenneled (and who could blame him for that???). He barks in his kennel as people approach him and most folks are immediately turned off.

For whatever reason, Nittany's owners surrendered him more than two-and-a-half months ago to the Centre Hall branch of the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. He's likely named after the Nittany Lion, a breed of Mountain Lion that once roamed throughout central Pennsylvania (now forever popularized by the Nittany Lion mascot associated with Penn State College). The way things seem to be going for this boy, it's quite possible that this Nittany will also soon be "extinct."

Update February 5, 2008: Nittany has settled in and is doing great. He is not obnoxious at all. He is a big boy, but does not even jump on you at all when greeting you. He LOVES to play. He will go find a ball in the yard and bring it to you. He will drop it at your feet and if it rolls away he will get it again and bring it back and drop it again. Our vet has estimated him to be about 4 years old. He knows sit, down and even gives you his paw.
