About Fairlee

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog

Fairlee was saved from a gassing shelter in Ohio back in July. Her chances of being rescued were slim because she came into the pound with a limp and many rescuers can’t afford to take on dogs with potential medical issues, but that didn’t stop one of the volunteers with this rescue organization, who looked at her picture and thought she was too cute to turn her back on.

While in medical boarding in Ohio, it was determined that Fairlee was heartworm positive and needed hip and knee surgery to correct damage done from being hit by a car. Fairlee underwent her heartworm treatment while in medical boarding in Cleveland, Ohio.

Fairlee arrived in Delaware in September and has been in foster care since her arrival. There are four things in life that Fairlee loves: men, rawhide treats, playing with a tennis balls, and going for rides. She like's her foster mom a whole lot, but when a male walks in the door, she becomes his best adoring buddy for the entire time he is in the house, totally ignoring any females. We originally thought that Fairlee did not get along with other dogs but we have found out that after she has been slowly introduced to them, Fairlee loves being with other dogs, and now we are getting Farilee used to the foster mom’s two new cats.

Fairlee is great around young children and she is housetrained and crate trained. She‘s a real sweetheart and is estimated to be around 2-3 years old. Fairlee will remain under our care through her surgery, but at this point, we'd like to start looking for a new forever home for her to get settled into. If you'd be interested in meeting this enthusiastic, happy, bouncy, fun loving girl, please contact us.

JANUARY 2007 UPDATE:

Fairlee met with an orthopedic specialist at Veterinary Specialty Center on January 15th. While there she was given a retest for heartworm and we received the wonderful news that Fairlee is now heartworm negative!!!! The specialist said that Fairlee is definitely a candidate for Femoral Head Ostectomy surgery to her hip. Surgery is going to cost between $1,883.00 and $2,226.00. They do not offer any type of payment plan so the monies will need to be raised before surgery can be performed. There is also a patellar luxation occurring to the right hind leg kneecap, estimated to be a grade 2 (meaning that the knee is constantly popping out of joint, causing limping and pain). Depending on which specialist performs the FHO surgery, there is the possibility that this may also be repaired at the same time. Fairlee's recoup is going to consist of her having stitches for 2 1/2 weeks, after which time she will be allowed to go through hydrotherapy sessions to strengthen the leg and hip. It is expected that she should make a full recovery and be able to resume an active lifestyle.
