Update Feb 2010: Boy has Utley come a long way since those pitiful pictures were taken. The sores on his body have all healed up, and all but a small amount of his fur has grown back a shiny black color. He is still being treated with medication, but hopefully it will not be much longer until we can discontinue his medication for good.
Utley loves to play. Whether he is playing with his foster mom or his doggie brothers and sisters, he is having a blast! He is housebroken, and crate trained. He goes into his kennel well if you give him a good boney to chew on. Utley is now in a foster home where he gets to sleep in his humans bed at night, and boy does he love it. He likes to sleep down by my feet, and in the middle of the night, I find that he has moved up closer to be with me. With his even keel personality, I think that he would be great with kids, although I have not tested him around children as of yet. Don't miss out on your chance to give a true Rags to Riches dog a place in your home....and your heart!
Update December 28, 2009: Utley is getting better and better. His hair is growing in and looking great. He is a spunky guy who would love a family of his own to give him all the attention he deserves.
Update November 21, 2009: Utley is doing great! He has been neutered and receiving his medications and baths like a trooper! He looks so much better now. The raw oozing sores have left, and he now has nice pink healing skin where they used to be. He isn't 100% yet, but he is getting there!!
-------
This is Utley. Utley has been wandering stray for over a year. Finally someone called for help for this pitiful fella. He barely has any hair, and his skin is raw and bloody. He scratches himself to the point of sheer exhaustion. His greatest wish right now is relief.
Utley is now receiving the treatment his poor little body desperately needs. He has demodectic mange, as well as flea allergy dermatitis. Compounding both of these issues, he has also created a secondary bacterial infection on his skin from scratching himself. Neither one of these conditions is contagious to humans, other dogs, or cats.
This brave little guy will go through months of daily baths, antibiotics, and special topical treatments to heal his severely irritated and inflamed skin. He got his first bath tonight, and he really enjoyed it. He loved having us rub his skin for him, and he loved getting all of the old scabs and wads of tough hair off his body. His tail wagged the whole time, and he fell asleep not soon after. I think he finally found a small amount of comfort at human hands.
Won't you please consider making a donation or sponsoring Utley so that he may one day soon stop scratching and remember what it is like to be a happy, playful dog?
