It all began with a loose potbellied pig living near the Philadelphia Airport. We received an email asking for help for Runway, a pig that was left to fend for himself. Of course A Buddy For Life would help! We have a foster mom who has a farm, and she would give him the love and care he deserves! What we didn’t know was how many feral cats were living with Runway…..until we got there!
There were approximately 20 cats, all unaltered, living in an old, abandoned industrial park near the airport. A Buddy For Life’s volunteers wasted no time trapping all of them, getting them spayed/neutered, medical attention for those who needed it, and re releasing the most feral ones so that they could live out there lives peacefully without reproducing. There are several “feeders” who have committed to feeding these cats on a daily basis. These feeders are very dedicated, and report any problems back to A Buddy For Life, so that we can maintain this feral colony.
We received a call from one of the feeders last week that a new gentleman was feeding them when she showed up. They talked, and he subsequently told her that he had dumped at least 50 cats into our colony, some friendly, over the last two weeks. His friend, an older gentleman, owned these cats and cared for them, and when his friend died, no rescue was willing to help him place these cats. So he dumped them. Unspayed and Unneutered. There are already kittens in the colony.
We are begging for help! A Buddy For Life went to the colony on Sunday. We were able to catch 12 cats, some as young as 3 months old. Many of the cats we were able to hand catch as they are very friendly. We are in dire need of volunteer trappers, cat food, tuna, and most importantly, foster homes or other rescues to help us with the kittens and the friendly cats. We understand that rescues are full this time of year with cats and kittens galore, but if your rescue or home could open up your hearts to one or two of these friendly cats, it could make all the difference in the world! The cats/kittens will come fully vetted and already spayed/neutered. We are also in desperate need of donations. We have a wonderful vet, Dr Mindy Carletti, who is working with us on this big project. We need donations to cover the cost of the surgeries and medical attention that these helpless souls may need. Please consider helping us help these kitties, who had once known a caring, loving touch and have now been thrown out to fend for themselves.
If you can offer your services volunteering or fostering/helping with placing kittens/cats, please email Jenn at jenn@abuddyforlife.org or call A Buddy For Life, Inc at 302-322-4997.
You may also mail a donation to our address at 1148 Pulaski Highway Suite 309 Bear DE 19701. Please make sure that with your donation you note that it is for the Airport Cats.
