Deuce's story

Feb 6, 2009---Today, we took Deuce to Spirit Animal Sanctuary in New York.  Deuce had fun on the six hour drive, as he got to play with his squeaky toys, eat McDonalds French fries, and stretch his legs in three different states in one day.  As we crossed over into New York from Pennsylvania, we were excited for Deuce’s new future.  The sun was just beginning to set when we arrived at the Sanctuary. What was left of the afternoon sun made the snow sparkle a gorgeous rainbow color. There was a ton of snow on the ground, and immediately, Alan, the founder of the sanctuary, put Deuce on a long line and let him romp and play in the snow.  You can see from the pictures that Deuce had the time of his life!  Our boy buried his face in the snow, rolled in it, romped in it, ate it and just couldn’t get enough of it.  I believe if Alan would have let him, he would have played out there all night!

We took him inside where he will be living with Alan and other dogs.  He was a little nervous at first, but bonded to Alan quickly.  He even made two doggie friends in a short period of time—Frankie, a hyper Boxer, and Diesel, a macho Doberman.  The three of them were playing like they had always known each other.

Deuce now has 128 acres of gorgeous property to roam on.  It is fenced in to ensure the dogs safety, and he has access to go inside whenever he wants through a doggy door.  He can spend his days chasing the birds and his playmates instead of shadows, and he can swim in the many lakes that are on the property.  Deuce absolutely loves water, so spring and summertime will be his favorite at his new home.

A Buddy For Life, Inc, would like to sincerely thank everyone who helped us make this dream come true for Deuce.  Without people like you, dogs like Deuce would not have been given a second chance at life.  We would also like to thank Deuce’s foster mom, Kathy, who put her whole heart and soul into him while he was living with her.  She loves him dearly, and will think about him everyday.  It is her who really gave Deuce his second chance—she loved him unconditionally, worked with him when others said she shouldn’t, and tearfully, let him go to his new forever home.

Alan has promised to send us pictures and updates on Deuce, and when we receive them we will post them for all of his admirers and supporters to enjoy!  Until then, Spirit Animal Sanctuary needs our help!  They are a non-profit, 501©3 organization that is doing wonderful things for dogs!  They take in the old, unwanted, sick, and aggressive dogs and give them a home for life—where they are understood, and treated with respect.  They currently have a new building for the dogs built, but need help raising money to have fencing procured and installed around this new housing.  The dog’s freedom at the new house will only be limited by how much fencing they can afford!  Let’s help them fence in those acres and acres of land for the dogs!  If you would like to donate, you may do so at

ideas for fundraisers

Deuce is defined as "the face of a die that bears two spots".  We have a Deuce of our own at A Buddy For Life, Inc, except instead of having two spots he has two distinct and different personalities.  You see, it all started when Deuce was a young puppy.  Two young people bought him, and never socialized him properly.  Deuce spent the first 10 months of his life living in his crate.  He was only allowed outside to eliminate.  He never had the real opportunity to chase squirrels, feel the sunshine on his muzzle, or play in puddles formed from newly dropped rain.  Because of this, Deuce is completely under-socialized, and although A Buddy For Life, Inc has done everything we can to help him, including intense training, he can not safely be adopted out as a pet.

Deuce was signed over to A Buddy For Life in May 2008.  We did not know what we know now.  His owners did not tell us that they did not socialize him until after we had him about a week and he started to exhibit some severe behavior issues.  Deuce is not only food aggressive, but he also resource  guards (meaning he guards things are of high value to him aggressively), he becomes bonded and fiercely protects one person to the point of becoming aggressive with another human.  He aggressively chases anything with motion behind it(children on bikes, trucks, etc).  The most heartbreaking thing to watch is when Deuce chases and plays with his own shadow.  You see, that was the only company and play toy he had for 10 months  while being stuck in that kennel.  It was his only escape from agonizing boredom.  At other times, once he is bonded to one person, he is the sweetest teddy bear of a dog.  He is loyal and faithful, and will do anything to please you.  He has really bonded with his foster mom, and is a big pile of mush in her hands.  Unfortunately, his foster mom is not in the position to make a commitment to a dog such as Deuce.  She has done so much for him, and wishes that the circumstances would have been different for Deuce.

Because A Buddy For Life, Inc, does not give up on any animal in its care, we contacted our dog trainer who worked intensely with Deuce at her facility for over two months.  This was at a great expense to the rescue, but we felt that Deuce deserved a chance. Our dog trainer, who had worked with many rescue dogs with somewhat similar problems, has advised us that Deuce should not be adopted out as a pet.  He is unpredictable and could be dangerous.  Unfortunately, his training has digressed, and we cannot safely adopt him out.

Deuce has been accepted into Spirit Animal Sanctuary in New York. There he will live out his life with people who understand dogs like him, and respect them for what they are.  Deuce will have other dog buddies(he loves to play with other dogs!) and will finally get the chance to feel the sunshine on his muzzle and be carefree—our one hope for Deuce is that once he realizes how wonderful life is, he will realize he no longer needs to chase shadows—balls and toys are much more fun!

We are asking you to help us help Deuce.  Help us right all of the wrongs that were done to him in his short life.  We need help raising funds.  Spirit Animal Sanctuary cares for about 100 animals and provides them with lifetime care.  Because of  the financial restraints associated with a home for life sanctuary, they are not able to provide a home for every dog in need.  They do have room for Deuce, but they require a sponsorship donation of $3,000 to help care for Deuce.

We need to raise this money so that we can give him the life he deserves.  It is not his fault his owners took a young puppy full of promise and turned him into a nervous, aggressive, confused dog.  Please help us get Deuce to the sanctuary where he can live out his life in peace among people who understand him.
